I love the math-leet kid. He is the kind of kid I would like my children to be. He does not need other peoples nods of approval to do what he wants. Self promotion is about believing in yourself and what you are offering and if you totally believe in it, self promotion is easy.

We just watched the movie "mean girls" and one of the characters in it (forget his name) was the "math-leet" kid who had no shame. He would dance and make a fool of himself and he would approach anybody without fear. It was funny, but I found myself thinking "why is this funny" and I realized it is because we are trained year after year that it's wrong to draw attention to yourself and not to fit it. Seeing someone who doesn't do that is abnormal and therefor funny. It doesn't matter that we are trying to "fit in" with a broken model, we all still try to conform to the same pattern. I don't feel put apon if somebody says to me "you should check this out" why would I fear saying that to someone else.
