$44.7 Billion Projected in Holiday Online Sales

October's out of the way, which means more holiday research is pouring in!
Forrester Research is forecasting an 8% increase in online sales this year over last year's total. That's $44.7 billion in Web sales!

Internet Retailer, which reported on Forrester's findings, said the increase demonstrates a clear transition to Web shopping.

"That would represent a continued shift of shopping to the Web, as the National Retail Federation has forecast total retail sales will decline 1% this holiday season."

Sucharita Mulpuru at Forrester said online shopping "remains the retail industry's growth engine" despite a slower economy!

Some other findings from the report:

  • 94% of consumers who made an online purchase in the past three months plan to shop on the Web during the holiday season. (That's a 92% increase over last year!)
  • 61% of online consumers say they shop online because they find products there they can't find elsewhere.
  • 52% of respondents said they shop online because it's easier to compare prices.
  • 52% said they're using the Web for holiday shopping to avoid crowds at the stores.

Whether it's for convenience, discounts or unique products, consumers are going to be spending their money online this holiday season. There's still time to create a unique and powerful website presence for business owners. Adding a high functioning e-commerce tool to the site is essential to get a piece of this uptick.

Online Channel Brightest Spot of Hope

An engaging Web presence is essential to the success of any business today, especially because it opens up an entirely new revenue stream through e-commerce!

The latest report by Retail Systems Research highlights the importance of e-commerce, indicating that selling goods or services online is an ideal way for a business to generate a profit during the downturn!

"In a dismal economic year, the online channel presents the brightest spot of hope for many retailers," according to authors Nikki Baird and Steven Rowen.

This is especially true now that so many consumers are using the Web to make purchases and research products or services! Studies repeatedly reveal a significant increase in online shopping over the past 12 months. As the report notes, "...consumers have accelerated their online shopping habits, particularly when it comes to searching out coupons and discounts."

To continue drawing customers to their online storefront, businesses are looking for customer-focused solutions, according to RSR. Primarily, the companies responding to the survey said they are concerned with keeping customers engaged. In fact, 67% of respondents said their top challenge is "getting consumers to engage more with us online."

Leverage Social Media To Increase Holiday Revenues

Word of mouth marketing is said to be the most powerful way to market a company, product or service. Recently, the mouths have become virtual as social networking takes a front seat in viral marketing for consumers. Just like your potential clients are likely to "Google" a business before using their products and services, so are they likely to see what others are saying about them in forums such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg and YouTube. For an 8 page report on leveraging social media to boost online holiday sales, view the report at TechnologyNewsWorld.

E-mail Marketing Helping Beat Downturn

E-mail marketing is helping companies beat the downturn and increase their marketing budgets! E-Consultancy and Clash-Media's latest study revealed that 53% of surveyed companies in the US have increased their marketing budget over the past year...all because of their e-mail and online campaigns.

The respondents cited cost-effectiveness, better targeted marketing and increased ROI as their reasons for switching to online lead generation. Here's what two of the respondents had to say:

  • "Better comparability between online and offline cost-per-lead has enabled us to shift budgets from off to online."
  • "Offline is too expensive and doesn't get the same speed of responses as online. Online gives faster calls to action and results, too."
Companies everywhere are switching their marketing efforts to the Web. They're saving money, reaching a larger market and increasing their profit all at the same time.

Web Presence Essential for Small Business Owners

Justin Kitch, a Web marketing expert from the firm Intuit, recently told Entrepreneur.com readers that:

"It continues to baffle me why any small business wouldn't use the Internet as an essential sales, marketing and customer relations tool."

That's because the Web is more effective than traditional marketing methods! As Kitch puts it, a Web presence "enables the business owner to engage customers in a two-way conversation and gain valuable feedback on their products and services."

That's vital information you can tell your prospects to build value in a walkthrough, especially since your solution boasts features like feedback forms, e-mail campaign capabilities and even a customer review tool!

Kitch has another critical piece of advice for businesses to make the most of their online storefront: "...make it easy for people to find you!"

He writes that small businesses should go beyond listing the physical address and phone number of the brick-and-mortar location. That's why your Web solution allows site visitors to access driving directions-complete with a map-directly on the Web site! There's no need to go to an outside resource and no mystery when it comes to finding the physical store!

Kitch also encourages business owners to display their Web address... everywhere! "...all of your print communications with your customers, everything from newspaper ads to sales receipts, should include your Web address." Pass that tip along to prospects or clients who aren't optimizing their online marketing efforts!

Great advice so far, but these days a simple Web site isn't enough. According to Kitch, a site must encompass the unique qualities of a business. That's why he urges site owners to customize, customize, customize!

"The Internet is all about specialization and customization," Kitch writes, "...changing the style and tone of your message online is inexpensive and easy to do. Rework your messages constantly to determine what draws the most customers into your store."

You already know that your Web solution makes that process quick, convenient and fun! From checking site statistics to making site modifications, your clients can easily experiment to make the most of their Web marketing efforts!

Above all else, Kitch writes, "The key is to get started. Once you've established a Web presence, you can experiment and expand to build a cost-effective marketing tool that will keep customers coming to your door."

Direct Mail Costs Rising, Email Contact Crucial

The United States Postal Service recently increased the price of postage once again. Small- and medium-sized businesses that advertise through direct mailing may soon find that these frequent price increases will take a toll on their marketing budget, and they won't be drawing many customers, either! According to the Justin Downey Marketing team, "The implication for direct marketing is simple. As postal rates go up, direct marketing budgets are less capable of delivering marketing messages to intended audiences with the same frequency."

Downey concludes that as direct mail becomes obsolete, e-mail is poised to become a viable marketing alternative. It costs less, it's green and it reaches more customers.

AllThatInternet.net provides powerful email marketing tools to stay in touch with customers and keep them informed about specials, new products/services and industry information that would interest them. Trista Polo, Sr. Relationship Manager for AllThatInternet.net, says "I keep in regular touch with my clients and prospective clients. It keeps me top of mind and helps me provide value. When I send email out to my clients, I make sure it has valuable information for them on enhancing their impact and helps them increase revenue. I encourage anyone using email marketing to ensure there is value for the reader, in addition to information provided for the purposes of getting a sale."

The listing is free of charge. Once you submit the infomration, the will send you a letter to verify your physical location and then you will be listed. You do need to have an MSN account and agree to their terms and conditions.

You can get a preferred listing by going through the yellowpages.com but that will have an associated cost.

Capturing the Social Networking Giant

The buzz in internet marketing revolves around social networking sites like FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn and many others. If you are ignoring this piece of your marketing puzzle, your revenue may suffer. Twitter is one of the newer ways to take advantage of social networking and has gained a lot of press since Ashton Kusher reached over 1 million followers. Using Twitter effectively may seem ellusive at first but there is a new tool out there by Lyris HQ that could help you. According to Kristina Knight of BizReport.com, "First, marketers monitor how the Twitter feeds are performing based on pre-set search terms. The Tweets are then shared through email and newsletters in the form of widgets. When the email is opened, the Twitter widget will take the user to their Twitter feed, generated a shortened URL and subject line so that the feed can be shared. From there marketers can measure traffic from Twitter back to their Website and determine who consumers are engaging with the feeds."

Survival of Business Depends on Internet Presence In This Economic Downturn

Don Davis at Internet Retailer has found even more evidence that businesses leveraging the Web will prevail during the economic downturn. Here, he says it all:

"By brute force, the economic crisis is accelerating the shift in retailing to the Internet."

Davis interviewed Bernard Luthi, VP of marketing and merchandising at Newegg.com, who confirmed that companies with Web sites have the competitive advantage.

"As Internet retailers, we have the ability to be more lean than bricks-and-mortar competitors, and that translates into savings for customers," Luthi said.

Luthi pointed out that many bricks-and-mortar businesses are having to shut their doors, prompting consumers to turn to the Web for products and services. Businesses that have a Web presence will draw consumers who regularly use the Web to shop as well as those who are experiencing a narrowing selection of traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

"It's our opportunity to serve not only customers who are comfortable shopping online, but those who were more inclined to shop bricks-and-mortar stores who suddenly realize those choices are declining and the prices they can get online are more attractive."

According to Davis, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were nearly 1.1 million retail stores in early '08, and 148,000 of them closed during the course of the year. And the bad news isn't over yet: The International Council of Shopping Centers anticipates that another 73,000 stores will close during the first half of this year.

"These developments present opportunities for online retailers, and some are taking direct aim at wooing consumers who previously shopped at bricks-and-mortar stores in their categories," Davis writes.

The message is clear: companies with an online storefront are more likely to survive than those that don't!

Web continues to increase in popularity, even during the downturn!

"The Internet is fast becoming the retail outlet of choice for Americans," according to the Opinion Research Corporation. The firm's recent survey found that 36% of respondents reported the percentage of online purchases they made last year increased, and those respondents cited the following reasons:

* 25% said it's easier to locate items on the Web * 19% said they found better discounts * 14% said they upped their online purchasing because it saved them time * 13% said online purchasing is more convenient

ORC's Linda Shea said, "...the dynamics of the online world are very different than they are in-store. The most successful online merchants are investing in tools and technologies that facilitate the shopper's entire purchasing experience..."

AllThatInternet.net's Web solution provides businesses with those online tools! Innovative e-commerce features, video embedding capabilities and customer reviews are just a few of the technologies offered through your solution that will enhance a site visitor's experience!

But that's not all-The news from ORC gets even better! Twenty-two percent of the respondents said that, despite the economy, their online purchasing will increase again this year!

Linda Shea said it's "...clear that shoppers are increasingly turning to the Internet as the channel of choice when they do buy."

It's just more evidence that consumers are hopping online to find the products and services they're looking for-especially during the troubled economy! Tell your prospects that while brick-and-mortar numbers are down, online retail is looking up!

Attracting reviews on your website

Helen Leggatt at Bizreport explains further:

"Providing consumers with user-generated reviews and feedback is a great way of building trust and loyalty," writes Leggatt. But to start building that trust, "...you need to begin encouraging feedback as soon as possible."

What's the best way to get customers writing reviews? Tell your clients and prospects to offer an incentive! Leggatt points to one Web site that generated about 1,000 reviews from customers on its site in a matter of ten days! Their secret? The owners of the site e-mailed customers offering a raffle prize and an e-coupon for their next purchase in exchange for their reviews!

To maintain fresh review content, Leggatt writes, "keep reminding customers that their feedback is welcomed." Tell your clients and prospects to use space on confirmation e-mails, product pages and e-newsletters to remind site visitors that they can write reviews! Sharing this advice will add to your own expertise and help your clients get their site off to a great start!

Customer Reviews Sway Budget Conscious Buyers

A survey by Jupiter Research and Bazaarvoice found that peer-influenced content like customer reviews can sway budget-conscious shoppers to buy! The study found that a large number--61%--of 'reluctant shoppers' can be positively influenced by content like reviews and ratings! Brett Hurt, founder of Bazaarvoice, said, "Shoppers trust and use the opinions of others in making choices about products and brands...As consumers head to the Web to research online and offline purchases, companies have a tremendous opportunity to provide them with the authentic user-generated content that is proven to build confidence, increase satisfaction and drive sales."

And by 2013, it's estimated that 221 million people will be online-nearly 70% of the population! Laura Wood at Research and Markets writes, "The demographics of the US Internet population are evolving to reflect the offline population. More people are coming online, and so are more users ages 35 and older." So no matter what industry your business is in, your target market is probably hopping online to look for products and services-and that trend is only going to continue!
